SKOPELOS
HISTORICAL MONUMENTS
The historical monuments on Skopelos are several, but they are not as organized as they should be. You can, however, combine beautiful walks with a search for these areas, such as for example the carved graves in Sentoukia, in the area Karya internally on the island.
In summary, the most important historical monuments on Skopelos are the carved graves in Sentoukia, the Venetian caslte in Chora of Skopelos, the old Episcope (also in Chora), the archaeological site on the peninsula of Stafylos –where the famous sword of the king of Peparithos was found– which, however, is not organized, the Castles (Pyrgoi) which are mainly in the area of Glossa and were old farmhouses, the Asclepieion, the sanatorium of ancient Peparithos, which is on the right of the port in Chora, the ancient walls remaining in Panormos and finally the remains of the roman baths in Loutraki
The social structure existing on Skopelos during the Turkish occupation influenced morals and customs, and modulated the particularity of its folk culture to some extent.
The island portrayed a severe separation among social classes. The ruling class were the large landowners and the shipowners of the island The largest part of the population was made up of small-scale farmers, workers and sailors.
Other Historical Places
Panormos
Panormos, in the place of the current settlement with the same name, had an Acropolis, on the hill “Palaiokastro”, whose walls –with their exceptionally interesting building structure- are still saved in excellent condition. There are several remains of other buildings on the slopes of the hill.
A lovely footpath leads from the Acropolis to the Cave of Panas, a unique monument on Skopelos for the worship of God Pan. This area offers one of the best potentials for the creation of an organized archaeological site for visiting, and it has already been incorporated in such programmes.
Ancient Selinous, Roman Baths
At the port of Loutraki (Glossa’s port) was the settlement of the third ancient city of Peparethos (ancient name of Skopelos island) named Selinous.
From the ancient city survives only a portion of the southeastern walls of 5th-4th century and some ancient building remains of the same area.
Also, at the end of the port of Loutraki (towards Old Klima) were operating roman baths. From the premises have left mainly the mosaic which half of that is located in the sea.
