AGIOS TAXIARCHIS IN VATOS
Monastery of Agios Taxiarchis in Vatos: The Monastery of Agios Taxiarchis was built on the eastern foothills of Mount Palouki. Located in the shadow of a sycamore tree and “cooled” by two springs. The one is built and located to the right of the entrance, while in the second one, the water gushes springs from the rock behind the monastery.
The monastery church is a single-aisled basilica, with a dome. The founder of the monastery was scholar Kaisarios Daponte, who founded it in 1761. The church was decorated by an old wooden temple that was replaced after the 1965 earthquakes with a newer built one. Some icons are still kept in the sanctuary, among which that of Agios Taxiarchis.
The church celebrates on 8 November, but the festival is usually performed a few days later, as the island priests are in mass in other churches on that day. After mass, there is food with local goat, spaghetti and plentiful wine!
